Hi
Mike you seem to be claiming that if we let all the students with SATs < 1200
into university this would NOT produce any increase in the variability in GPAs?
Given good reason to think that these students would score on average at a
lower level than students with SATs > 1200, I fail to see

One form of the formula for the Pearson r is following:

Chris- I just walked out of a board of trustees meeting - committee progress
report on fostering student/faculty collaboration in research- so yes, there
are a few "dress up days" (but I feel really goofy in this tie!). :)

That's not as scary as the fact that one local high school had 37 students with
GPAs over 4.0 and honored every one of them with the title of valedictorian on
their offical paperwork!
UGH! heaven forbid we pick one and damage 36 self-esteems!

Hi Patrick
I just finished my first year as chair (also a 3 year rotation) in a dept. of
the same size. I had 4 reviews incl. a tenure review, we hired a new person, we
revised our curriculum, and in the spring one staff person (a technician)

Be as organized as possible, and realize that your administrative tasks are
going to take up a huge chunk of your time--your research may slow a bit, since
there are only 24 hours in a day, and that baby is likely to chew up a bunch of
your sleep time ;-)
Good luck!

starting my 8th year here) and would like to be as effective as possible
without it killing me.
As background, the dept. has 9 1/2 full time members, wi
Mike's pessimistic view of grades and tests does not jibe with my
experience. Just a couple of observations.
1. Whenever I have examined Cronbach's alpha for my multiple-choice or
short-answer tests I invariably find quite respectable values. So such tests
