I've had students ask this question for years but I've not found a definitive answer. I was reminded about it again last night when cold caused me to wake up every 90 minutes. Here's the question: We know that there's a 90 minute cycle in sleep stages. But if you wake someone up for e.g., 30 minutes in the middle of the night, will you return to the stage you would have been in had you not awakened? Or would your cycle be shifted by 30 minutes? Ed
