There are a couple of books your former student can take a look at. The most
comprehensive human factors textbook is by McCormick and Sanders (1992)
Human Factors Engineering and Design McGraw Hill. Another introductory text
book is Wickens, Gordon & Liu (1998) An Introduction to Human Factors
Engineering. Longman.

For someone in the field looking for an intro to doing HCI I'd suggest
Preece, et al (1994) Human Computer Interaction. Addison Wesley or
Shneiderman (1992) Designing the User Interface. Addison Wesley.
Schneiderman tends to focus on his approach, Preece has a bit broader scope

And my favorite overview and introduction to the field is Norman (1988) The
Design of Everyday Things. Currency Doubleday. This book will put you in the
right frame of mind but doesn't provide the details as do the other book

Let me know if you have any other questions

Subject: Human Factors textbook

Tipsters, a former student of ours who now works designing web-based
products
has asked for a recommendation for an entry level textbook in the area of
human
factors. Does anyone have any experience with such a texts? I imagine that
a
human factors text that emphasizes human-computer-software interaction would
be
most appropriate.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Miguel
