Hi folks, Symptoms associated with the damage to structures involved in the allocation of attention to the opposite side of the body and extrapersonal space, tend to change as the underlying damage resolves. Hemi-neglect/inattention is the most severe symptom, which is associated with lack of response to all stimulation on the neglected/unattended side. . . often including painful tactile stimulation (no, "ouch!!"). These symptoms often resolve within several days following the onset of damage (i.e., short-lived). Extinction (lack of report of stimulation with bilateral stimulation only) and allesthesia (report of stimulation to a homologous site on the side opposite the side of stimulation - displacement) tend to be the residual symptoms (Bender, 1952 - Disorders in Perception); extinction occuring more frequently than allesthesia. At least this is what I recall from the dark ages when studying this phenomenon myself. =) Sandra Sandra Nagel Randall, Ph.D. Psychology Saginaw Valley State University University Center, MI
