decades, I feel it may be helpful to remark on this. I have had students try
essentially the same argument-- that they knew the material, they just couldn't
say it. I tell them that my job is not to read their minds,
I don't know about stage performers but students have an inherent need to
believe in mind reading. If you don't believe me, ask a student who flunked
your last essay exam whether he/she believes that you should have been able
to tell that he/she knew the information even though it was identifiable
