I will concede that some studies randomly assigned patients to ECT vs
drugs. I claimed that I didn't know of any. Given that ECT was a
choice, I would have to check that there was true random assignment.
The subject offered the study who felt negative about ECT probably did

I think its a great example. But unlike termination of shock, people buy the
ads anticipating the ads will not come on in the future. Perhaps similar to the
distinction between escape and avoidance ...

Can you say confabulation!?! I was reading something about Kindle's (and an
app) and then read your question- wasn't that a clever response - just combine
two questions into one and save an email- of course, it makes no sense to
anyone who reads it but hey. . . :)

That depends on which company you are referring to and the target behavior. I
think the Kindle folks (i.e., Amazon) are trying to encourage you to buy the
Kindle WITH the ads. If you are looking at it the way you mentioned I don't
think it is any kind of reinforcement. This is a one tr
Yes, neg reinforcement to buy full app. When free or less costly app is
downloaded, the ads can be/assumed by marketers? to be, aversive. So I got
punished for buying or downloading such apps in the first place. Hence, many
will now attempt to avoid such downloads? Now, to remove that aversive

Both of the studies you cite compare ECT with a drug.
There is no mention (at least in the Abstracts that I have access to) random
assignment to a control condition such as a sham ECT.
And there's a difference in stating that patients WOULD be motivated to do
something, and not ruling ou
Mike says "It don't know of any study that used random assignment of treatment

I didn't say that I -believed- that the reported results of ECT were an
artifact of treatment avoidance, just that I am not impressed by the attempts
to reject that possibility.
If I had to make a bet, I would put my money on ECT in -some- way counteracting
the effects of depression.

Yes, McConnell of worm-running fame, was one of the targets.
I know a sociologist who was doing some research on the memory molecule
controversy at the time of the attack. The FBI followed him around for years as
a possible suspect (until they caught Kaczynski).
