We teach statistics using SPSS, but I wonder if any people have been switching 
to R?  Here's a recent post on R's popularity.

We have switched to R some years ago.

I first tried to get students use the console but found that I spent too much time teaching them commands instead of stats.

I finally wrote two GUI for my own needs: AtelieR (for teaching basic sampling concepts, but also more sophisticated ones in Bayesian statistics) and R2STATS (a GUI for GLM and GLMM). Most operations and plots I wanted students to use are now fully automatic and this saves time.

Both GUI are very elementary and I wrote them for my own needs but hopefully these could be of help.
