I agree with Zoli that you should drop the '--output
xplanet_image.jpeg' part of your command. That way you will no longer
create the massive load of old data in your Trash folder.
By the way find below the command I use to start xplanet here:

Tlf surely does not create or move any files into a trash folder.
Where is your trash folder located? Could you give the list of most recent
files from it?
(I mean "ls -ltr trash | tail")

I just had a second look how TLF handles the marker file.
There is no special magic on the work here. TLF just opens the
existing file and replaces its content - the old file gets not deleted,
no new file created.
