Often I'll type a command at tmux's colon prompt and screw it up. I
see a flash of an error message. It's like it's taunting me. We both
know I did something wrong. Tmux even knows what I probably screwed
up. But tmux only wants me to know that it knows, not actually help me
figure out what the @#$% the right way is.

K, so, I'm being a bit silly and/or paranoid. But seriously, the error
messages disappear ridiculously fast, and it prevents me from learning
how to use this wonderful piece of software. For example, I type
"swap-window 3 4" and it blinks something in the status bar, but
doesn't swap windows 3 and 4. Wtf? How do I extend the error message
time? How do I see tmux errors? This incredibly aggravating, on the
level of trying to grok screen's rc file. It actually upsets me more
than the last three US presidential elections, which is stupid,
considering the global scope of politics and the relatively trivial
scope of a terminal multiplexer, but true nevertheless.

Thanks for any help,

jake
