T4 architecture question: Valves vs. Servlet Filters

Hi,

I had a look at the Tomcat 4.0 document "Comparing RequestInterceptor and
Valve Technology". From what I understand Valves are an improvement. 

But: How do Valves compare to ServletFilter?
