Yup, you need to use GNU tar to untar it.

I got the same error, but I just ignored the error, built mod_jk
from the source and its has been running fine for me for the last
month.

multiple times. It always gunzips fine, but when
doing the untar, I get a directory checksum error.
Has anyone been able to download it successfully?
I've tried both the .gz and .Z files with the same
results.
