I had never used baluns on any antennas for 45 years . . . But about a year ago I made a couple of ferrite choke baluns . . . one for my 160m dipole, one for my W3DZZ, just to see if made any difference to the local noise (from electrical garbage) - the designs were recommended to me by G3TZQ.

I have no problem with awards with lots of categories. It is much easier today to work lots of countries on 160, because of remote radio.  Remote Radio is another great innovation for the hobby.  It also allows people that have limited space or live in restricted areas to get on and play radio

Ed I used to have half sloper for more than 10 years and it was working quite well  but a few years ago I tried shunt feed the same tower ( 21m with big yagi on the top) and the difference was 1-2 S favouring shunt fed tower ( I was making tests with far DX stations).

Why not try a Half Sloper. Your tall crank up would work well with that... Take Coax up inside the tower and then run the braid to ground at the top of the tower and a 1/4 wave wire +/- off to one side at about 45 degrees. It will make the whole system work. You might have to cut or lengthen
