So what's the protocol when a CW man checks a frequency, hears nothing, sends a couple of QRL? and hears nothing and begins to run stations.  Then sometime later a guy running an imaginary mode...oops...sorry, FT8 shows up and wants to park on the CW man's frequency?  Who is to blame?  I'll

I suspect that Guy is on to the strong possibility for the relatively poor RX conditions on 160 this past weekend. I use diversity receive with my K3. The main RX is connected to a "Dual Flag" array (basically a simplified Waller/ expanded DHDL) and a HiZ 4 square on the sub receiver. The HiZ

Interesting observation Guy. I noticed what I am almost certain was very high angle propagation on Sunday evening at sunset when I was only able to hear Europe on my low dipole (very low, about 20' so a real cloud warmer). I could not hear them at all on Beverages, SAL, or receive 4 square or

Hi Trevor, Luis IV3PRK has good info on DHDL, based on the original by George Wallner, AA7JV See http://www.iv3prk.it/TX3A-DHDL.htm I use a 1200 ohm terminating resistor; source resistance is about 900 ohms. 900/75 = 12 so turns ratio to match is 3.5:1I use a 2 turn primary and 7 turn

Hello Bill: Increased spacing might help your 160 meter performance. However with multiple sources of local noise it may not be possible to get the results you are looking for. The NCC-2 is very good when there is one source of noise. It can produce very deep nulls and make a huge difference in

Perhaps your solution might be a sloper, using the radial bed, instead of another INV-L? I used to have an INV-L at the edge of a salt marsh in Connecticut, with 1/2 the radials on the marsh & the rest on the bog beside it. I use a pneumatic spud gun with fishing reel (see it on my QRZ page)

Re: Topband: FT8 on 160m

To me, the issue comes down to contained or not contained when it comes to signals on the bands. We're already contained by the limits of the band itself so there's effectively a finite space for everyone and if FT8 or RTTY or XYZ wanted to and was allowed to be everywhere, the QRM would be

One thing that occurred to me reading this and parallel threads, is that the path was really high angle. Possibly high enough to be well into the "doughnut hole" high angle null of a "pure" vertical. The presumption is that the DX is always, always, always, no exceptions, coming through at low

Re: Topband: 160 inverted L radials question

Hi James, The vertical really needs to come down directly to the central common point of the radial field for them to operate with all the advantages. Running a single wire from the base of the vertical at the ground 30 feet over to the center of a radial field could easily lose 3 or 4 dB, more
