Hi Pete,
I also had problems with broadcast stations at my 4 EL bidirectional
(330°/150°) broadside K9AY arrays 84 meters apart uses three 0° hybrid
combiners.
The problem was solved by a Hi-Z amplifiers with operational IO AD8855ANZ

Looks like we have worked 32 times on all bands but 10-12m since 2008.
Ive lived at the retirement qth hr in Ohio since 2009. 3 acres but
essentially no trees. So a 52 ft mast supports the 160/80 INVL's . I
peaked out at 26 radials. when I noticed adding one more made no
difference in the swr.
Bob,
Before the contest we were on 160 a number of nights. Only a few nights were
we able to work more than a handful of EU stations and they were all much
weaker than normal. Regular S7 stations, like DL8LAS and OK1CF were barely
audible. Two years ago, from the same spot and a very similar
Over my soil the K9AY's were Lazy.
I added radials under the elements and they woke up, but directivity
suffered a bit.
I added 4 more radials between the elements and they woke up even more...
And the directionality was back.

That's a new one for me! A short Beverage for higher-angle signals. Thanks!
I need a few of those here for closer stateside signals. :-)

Hi Pete -
What version of the K9AY components are you using (e.g., original
K9AY, Array Solutions, etc) ? Some versions incorporate broadcast band
filters or switchable bandpass filters. Could that be your problem?

I was able to find the specs on the Array Solutions control box. Yes there
is a bandpass filter when the preamp is switched on .
This is copied from the documentation:
Preamplifier: 15 dB gain, feedback type, using a silicon NPN transistor
Filter passband: ±2 dB from 1.80 to 4.5 MHz
Filter
Hi Pete,
If you are using the blue Array Solutions control box, it is my
recollection that when you switch on the preamp, it also adds a BCB filter
to the signal path.

Hi Pete,
Any preamp that has loss definitely needs repair. Preamps are simple
devices that are easy to troubleshoot, the transistor is a likely
culprit

I just deployed my K9AY loop (yes, I know I'm late). Anyhow, while it
shows substantial directivity on broadcast stations, I was surprise by
how much the K9AY loop's sensitivity suffers compared to my inverted L.
Listening to a broadcast station with the K9AY on 1500 KHz, the station

George, thats a big drop off in Q's from a very reliable QTH.
