I am building a 90 ft, 80m rotatable dipole. I am near the point of fabricating

1. Does the size of the gap between the center element and element tip make
Was able to work them on topband at 0730z. They were not strong at all, but
workable.

At 0500z the op started working NA. Many of us worked him then. He was a
good 579 from 0300z working EU until at least 0510z when I shut the rig
down.
They seem to up load the logs to Clublog often.
Glad to get a new one on 160m!

Milt,
In this aspect all DXpeditions are equal.
Just one comment: Having a large person expedition can yield large
differences in 160m Q's compared to a two person expedition. On a two man
operation, the ops must decide what band to operate at night, 30, 40, 80 or
160m. They may want to make Q's
Alex,
I went to the freq that you were spotted but never heard you. I called
blind several times, maybe you heard me, but nothing heard from you. Have
heard and worked you previously with fair signals.

For 160m I have a 75ft irrigation pipe vertical (4 3 inch pipe) with two
50ft top hat wires wires. For 80m I run a #10, 65ft wire with 12 inch
homebrew fiberglass stand offs up the side of the irrigation pipe. At the
base, I have two separate matching devices that I manually change to
Guys,
I am hearing something between 1910 and 1925. Its a rapid, raspy, pulse
tone, but its coming from the SE in Central AZ (SA direction). It is just
above my noise level, currently S4, so not strong. Do not hear it on my TX
vertical. Don't know if this could be the noise reported or some local

using their external RX antenna jack. I know that I need to be concerned
Mike,
Can you find or provide more info on these 80m zero-five verticals? What
does zero-five mean or stand for?
I though about using relays to switch in/out the top loading wires for
160m, but computed the voltage to be over 10 KV. Vacuum relays to handle
that voltage are very expensive. Then

Observations about carrier on 1810.8. I'm in North Central AZ, just north
of Prescott. Time - 0730z.
With my HI-Z 4sq, I hear the carrier:
NW - S4 (Pacific NW is about 340 degrees)
NE - S3
SE - S2
SW - S2
Atmospheric noise is about S2
Carrier with my TX vertical is S7 on peaks, with background
I have burn up two output band switches on my Ameritron AL1200 while on

less that 3:1.
Could the discussion above be the same for the AL1200 amp? I'm tired of
replacing the band switch. I looked at replacing it with a
Tom,
I worked XV7BM at 1328z this morning about 10 minutes before our SR. When I
worked him, he was 559, but within 10 minutes he was 579!
I'm running about 1400 watts out to a 70 ft vertical with (2) 50 ft top hat

Jim,
N6SS in AZ worked him a few days ago at our SS on 80m. They were on 80m
RTTY yesterday at SS and workable in AZ. I don't do RTTY, so still looking
for them,
They were also on yesterday at SS on 160m but no one west of W5 land heard
or worked them.
Its going to be difficult with the Contest
Heard TO7CC at our SS yesterday on 80m CW - 0100z, until about 0130z. You

Will be looking for you on 80m CW at or Sunset this evening, about 0100z
and later.

I find that It makes a difference being further South and East. I worked
only one EU in 30 years in So, Calif on 160m. I didn't have a great station

Nick,
A 50ft tophat vertical is a good antenna. I would suggest that you put down
as many 135 ft long radials as possible, at least 25. If this is not
feasible, put down as may random lengths radials as you can.
The problem is that it is a vertical antenna and will be noisy,
particularly if you
You guys are lucky. Two evening ago we worked EU, last night, nothing. A
