My group is planning a Caribbean trip next year for one of the CW contests. If
anyone has some ideas on design or deployment of temporary antennas for DX
(160m or any low band actually), it would be helpful as we are in early
planning. If you have done this before, luggage is the preferred
Growing up, Jim Lawson W2PV (SK) was my local antenna mentor. He addressed 80m
dipoles for DX in a conversation with me one day with the following statement,
paraphrasing Jim, "If you can't put up a more elaborate or directional antenna
for 80, just use a high dipole, say 120 feet or so. It
Joe, I have had some trial with this bidirectional setup many years ago.
Although having a NE and SW listening antenna is quite desirable for stations
in the NE USA, I have experienced repetitive mechanical failure with this
system. In the wind, no matter what wire diameter twin lead
A few ideas might be helpful here. I was at the station over the weekend and
found a significant amount of noise coming from one of two computers in the
station. Significant noise S5 at 1820. One computer runs the cluster and 2m
connection. That was clean. The other handles most of the

I have used the bait release on this website to great success in order to drop
lines right where I want them vertically. You can do things with a drone bait
release that you can't do with other methods, but it is not a substitute. Also

Reading all these replies makes me think that the intent of my post might have
been somewhat misinterpreted. My post was not intended to be a scientific
analysis of only RDF or performance in rating or ranking various antennas. It
was, however, intended to introduce possibly significant (in
This is possibly a more complicated subject than just performance. I gave a
lecture on this topic, comparing a Hi-Z circle 8, SAL-20, SAL-30, beverage
(unidirectional and bidirectional and BOG) and the K9AY array.
In this talk, I considered performance as a factor, but also considered
My QTH is awkward for putting additional beverages BUT I am intrigued by the
DHDL if it can be phased broadside (I have enough room for that), per the
reference from IV3PRK:

I have a few questions that would need to be answered.
1.
I have done this with twin SAL-30 antennas. Spaced about 120' apart.
Difficult to say A/B how much audible improvement is present. I can say
signals are stronger by about 3dB and the improvement on F/B is more noticeable
than forward gain. Not all improvement here is S/N, in my opinion.
I purchased some 7mm dia snap on cores for RG6 receive antenna coax. I was
wondering if anyone had any experience or suggestion as to how many one would
place on each lead. The feed lines are about 50% on the ground with grass
growing over or buried 2-3". The lengths vary from 300' to 750',
First, I want to say this topic is not necessarily topband related, so if
anyone wishes to comment about my question, please do so privately so as to cut
down on band width. Thank you.
Very smart people live on this list and I want to reach out to them about my
system as they may know
