A friend of mine ( who to this day knows absolutely nothing about radio,
propagation or especially antennas ) and I worked together about 30 years ago
and when he found out I was doing radio he immediately said " Do you know
VE1ZZ?" No I replied not personally but I know "OF" him because he

Jeff,
Thanks for the great writeup about Jack. Although I didn’t know him as well as
you did I had the pleasure of meeting him several times and saw many pictures
of the old setup. Logged him from Navassa on both trips, he not only had a
booming signal, he was always courteous operator. RIP

Never really got to know him but I have enjoyed the great stories. That is
something about ham radio I love. You never know who you might be
very sad to hear this...
Jack was my first DX on 80m in the 80th, using an antenna myself, which
could not really work - only he made the contact possible!
Later, I had many topband-contacts with him and no wonder: Jack was my
first VE on Six in 1992...

Jeff,
Thanks for passing this on. I have forwarded your (sad) note in its

Sad news indeed.
Our first QSO was in 92 when I was using
an octagon copper tube short loop for 160
in northern Illinois. The next few were
when I was using a 30' random wire in
Indiana. 5W would get into the telephone
so I was pretty much QRP all that time.
The next were when I moved back
had dozens of QSOs with him over the years.

Very sad news. The passing of a legend. I remember hearing "zulu zulu"
from A73A back in 2012. My only NA on 160 in the CQ WW SSB.

Hello Gang
I am truly saddened to have to pass along the contents of an email I just
received from Carl Leahy who was one of Jack Leahy, VE1ZZ's sons.
It is short and sweet - but I will add some personal comments after sharing his
note to me.
