WHS " windows home server " or OSX there are bunch of mac minis doing
server duty around the world .
Linux OS are plentifull some are clearly made for headless ( no screen
or keyboard conected ) server duty and have no GUI aka desktop with

Actually then, Vortexbox is designed for you. It is Linux underneath,
but it has a convenient web interface that allows you do almost anything
you need, without having to go anywhere near a scary Linux command line
terminal.

Yes self powered/ Same thing worked for a while, then nothing but
problems. Thanks for the suggestion on a powered one. However i like the
footprint of a self powered USB.

Yes Mac wifi and Touch wifi. Havent experienced "drop out " problems.
Just problems with my external USB hooked into the touch.

with robust WIFI connections, the two WIFI "hops" can certainly work
just fine, but if you notice dropouts, etc. once you start running LMS
