OK thanks - I guess I could try and see for myself. I upgraded LMS to
7.9 then as a result the SBT updated to 7.8, is that expected? I assume
that the SBT doesn't go to 7.9 matching LMS version in this case.
Also perhaps I am imagining things but the SBT seems to sound better on
7.8, is this by d

No!
There's nothing wrong with the SPDIF, and there's no faffing about
trying to get it working, whereas the USB out is very hit and miss.
