Well I had a few problems after the update. Mostly related to the
restarts that it required. It screwed up my network, I lost a load of
plugins and had to reload them from scratch. Thanks to this forum it is
now OK. :)
Triodes post were most helpful and it was his wonderful BBC iPlayer that

I use 7.8 and it is very stable with my iMac. So go for it!
I did, but mono 96/24 ALAC files still cause a problem. I think that
I'll start another thread to see if I can get the attention of someone
who is doing the coding.
7.7.2 and 7.7.3 are the same in functions/settings as described in that
link regarding the update nag.

turning off nag update instructions work for both 7.7.2 and 7.7.3. Of
course there should not be a nag (currently) for 7.7.3 because that is
the newest official version.

I upgraded to the current firmware, and when it failed to work with
24/96 mono ALAC files, I downgraded to the previous firmware, which
works well, except that I now get messages encouraging me to upgrade to
the firmware which I have found to be deficient.
