Are they higher bit rate streams that cause the noise? I could be that some streams cause a large spike in CPU usage due to pre buffering and stuff and the noise you are hearing is "digital hash" from the CPU. The onboard audio of cheap laptops are notorious for this type of behavior. A poorly

Not normal, but can happen. Optical is immune to such line noise. This could be emanating from most anything electrical, some of the most common culprits are psu's and mains lines themselves. Maybe a grounding issue? -- toby10 -
