I tried changing the music folder to a single artist and that seemed to
work (not album shuffle)so I reset the folder to all artists and now a
full scan is taking place which has now exceeded 35 minutes.

First, enable shuffle mode on the player, however you're able to. From
the remote, the web interface, or, on the Duet Controller, Radio and
Touch set it either from Settings or the Now Playing screen.
