Adding a new data point - I am concluding that the Touch does not work
with the big Seagate 3TB drive for unknown reasons. After trying
reformatting again as NTFS, verifying that there is only 1 primary
partition and only storing music files on the 3TB Seagate Goflex I
could not get the touch to
Can't you just reformat the drive with a single partition?

Maybe not. One thing to try would be to re-partition the drive with a
primary partition sized smaller than 2.0Gb and see if that works. I
know that the Touch can work with 2GB USB hard drives.

It should show you how the disk is partitioned. There should only be 1
partition and it should be a physical partition.
If not, just delete all partitions

Seagate Goflex Harddrive with USB 3.0 (supposedly backword compatible to
