Today, sound suddenly doesn't work on my user account and I don't recall
any installations or updates between yesterday and today to cause this
issue. Also, the guest account still has workign sound. This goes for
built-in speakers on my laptop, as well as headphones.

It was a temporary error in sysvinit ubuntu4, which is now fixed.
This version was only in vivid-proposed. We don't recommend that people
use this repository (only for tools) - I suggest you disable it.

Thanks for reporting this bug. According to your error message, there
is a syntax error in your /usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d file. However in a
freshly updated vivid I don't see any problem. Is it possible that you
edited that file yourself? Could you please attach that file to this
bug?
