I've figured out that this bug is triggered by having bookmarked the
Trash, which I must have done by accident with an errant Ctrl-D a long
time ago. After removing that bookmark, the problem seems to go away.
(And, just to verify, if I bookmark the Trash again, it comes back.)

Note that when pressing an item in the list and keeping the finger
pressed, the background of the list item becomes dark, and the text is
displayed in a light color.
Something’s up with the theming applied to that list view, but I don’t
know what.

I flashed my test device with --wipe, and I can observe the issue
described here. The OOBE wizard uses an unmodified Ubuntu WebView
(https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~unity-
team/unity8/trunk/view/head:/qml/Wizard/Pages/here-terms.qml#L115),
which uses a ListView inside a Popover for the item selection
Hrm. So to reproduce, install unity8 on the desktop and then:

Tried the PPA. The Canonical VPN doesn't work for me. It says it connects,
but then I can't access anything on the net or VPN. Reverting it, and its
working again. A few times the nm-applet has also crashed when I do this. -
Should I open a new bug for these issues?

systemd-timesyncd: Failed to call clock_adjtime(): Invalid argument
systemd-timesyncd says it was able to sync the clock but also report
