Just for posterity's sake, I was able to solve my issue of older
initrd's consuming all of the space in /boot by removing the ones whose
kernel had been purged.
I had a /boot partition that was quite small and nearly every kernel
upgrade would fail with "no space left on device" messages.

I had previously attached a slightly old version of the lp1567597-test.c
program that contained a mistake. I'm now attaching the corrected
version after fetching it from my testing VM.

The reboot process succeeded in turning off all network access but
failed to actually reboot. As far as I can tell, this is because

Same problem here, affects me on 4.4.0-93-generic. Dell E7450 with
docking station and 2 monitors, used to work flawlessly on 14.04.
