In my machine matplotlib by default selects the "TkAgg" backend. I
worked around this freezing problem by selecting the "gtk3" backend
instead, as in 'ipython3 --pylab=gtk3'. I had to install
'python3-cairocffi' as requested by a warning at startup and now
everything seems to work well.

your ibus-fix in place, I opened gnome-language-selector, selected
"none" instead of "IBus", and re-logged in. That disables im-config's
variable settings, and only the IM related variables w

I found the conflict with the eGalax Touch Daemon driver.
I moved the driver startup from /etc/init.d/eGtouch.sh
to userspace as I don't need the touchscreen at login.
The strange thing is I have 17 machines with this configuration and only

screen flickered after trying to unlock. The display got off after the
lock timeout. and then whenever tried to unlock, screen would not wake
up after mouse hover. only pressing enter works that too takes time.
also need to type multiple time. It happen when the screen goes of
14.04 here as well. I didn't try purging the PPA, so I don't know if
that works, but what I did was the following:
1. disable the PPA (and sudo apt update)
2. Synaptic refused to apply the changes, so:
