around a year ago in ubuntu 17.04 with any kernel, but at some point it
became broken. Probably in 17.10.

Ok, so I restored my system and I got back to my Mate and all my settings are
kept.
I did a lot of things, even removed ecryptfs while extracted all my home
directory from it.
I removed NVidia drivers but I don't think that they caused the problem.
But only reinstalling of XServer finally

occurred. DNS didn't work at that time, so I removed resolvconf. I
manually updated my sources.list and did a successful dist-upgrade.
Then I tried to reinstall resolvconf, and got the error below.
I removed the dangling "original" symlink, and then "apt-get -f install"
completed successfully.

I'm not exactly clear what you mean by purging and settings removal.
I've run uninstall with the proprietary driver (and rebooted) I've used
nvidia-driver-396 and apt-cache remove --purge'd that. I've tried to
video cards now. In short, I've tried everything I can think of, but
still end up with
