Could you please tell what does not work?
"man 7 pam" and "man 7 PAM" both open the pam(7) manual.
If libpam0g-dev is installed "man pam" opens pam(3) "man PAM" opens pam(7).
Do I miss something?

There is a fundamental difference between search (what you do when you
don't know where something is) and navigate (what you do when you know
exactly where something is, and want to go there). Why the gnome team
have chosen to conflate them, and their mental state while doing so, is
anyone's guess.

I have made a patch in upstream/Ubuntu 4.15/4.13 kernels to force
touchpad using SMBus mode.
SMBus mode requires i2c-i801 kernel module which is in modprobe
blacklist
The fix suggested by hgrie works for me. ibus-setup is running ibus-
daemon, which immediately fixed the issue and lasts until logout.
I note that adding 'ibus-daemon --xim' as a startup application is a
permanent fix for the issue in my case.

Unfortunately my possible workaround in comments 3 & 4 only partially
work - cups stops prompting for a password but its smb backend
(/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/samba/smbspool_krb5_wrapper) does not receive
the AUTH_UID is not set and therefore cannot spool the job the a Windows
print server.
