I have found a working combination of printer driver (from Epson) and
printer definition (one plugged in it shows up about three times as
different versions of the same XP-960), so this is not a 'bug'. Though I
have to say that it's not immediately obviouw what is going on!

Sorry, but I tried your fix last night and the issue is still there.
FWIW samba wasn't installed but samba-common was so using synaptic I

While installing Xfce with Synaptic it stuck at Processing triggers for
dbus (1.10.6-1ubuntu3) and just sat there.
