So I upgraded to 19.04 and now I no longer can get the a52 working.
It worked fine on 18.10.

Only way to get it back is reboot.
If I switch to another VT and run "xinit -- :1" I have a mouse on that
X server but still no on the original one.
Also since xinit only starts a single xterm and when I type in that
xterm the mouse pointer gets invisible until I move the m
read again. the boot shown is NOT the current boot but one from 5 days
ago.
I already made the changes to make the journal permanent.
