Added note: sudo apt install byobu;sudo purge-old-kernels
seems to be resolving the /boot space issue.

/boot was full, so I moved one file 'initrd.img-4.10.0-27-generic' from
/boot to /tmp and ran:
sudo apt autoremove
This prompted the crash that I reported.
