Same problem here with my Ubuntu 15.10 and Creative Soundcard. Most of the time is not working. I usually run the script: pulseaudio -k && sudo alsa force-reload to make the sound work properly, but sometimes this is not working too.

I have personally tested a pair of earbuds to make sure that sound could play through the headphone port, and that isn't a problem. The sound driver just refuses to recognize the existence of the speaker, even though the kernel does. I wouldn't be surprised if the last upstream update had something to do with it.
