Taking cue from Raymond's comments I managed to get sound from the
Realtek circuits. I used "sudo hdajackretask" to change the pins'
assignments. The whole procedure is easy though a bit elaborate, but I
do not know how to write a permanent programmatic

Plugging or unplugging the headphone does not change anything in the
output of command hdajacksensetest -a. Neither there is any sound on the
headphone nor on the built-in loudspeaker.

Built-in speaker never had problems with ubuntu 14.04.
Anyway, here is xenial's output for hdajacksensetest -a

Today, 6/4/16. Upon ubuntu's notice of Linux Kernel 4.4.0-17
availability, I proceeded immediately to upgrade xenial. On restarting
the computer the built-in sound device went anew mute. I do not know
enough about the workings of alsa to give good

Today, 4/4/16. Sound came alive all of a sudden while playing a short
film on browser. I heard a a crackle from the built-in loudspeaker and
sound started normal. Let's hope it doesn't go silent again!
