I can confirm that this happens with Spell checking turned on from the
Language Text menu in System Settings. Turning it off is a work
around.

That would explain why it's gone so long unnoticed - was driving me
nutty. Can confirm that Spell Checking and Word Suggestions cause
this behavior, however I've been unable to reproduce with Auto
correction turned on only. Thanks for the work around!
