I upgraded to the LTS stack and now firefox loads the mentioned URLs
without Xorg freezing the desktop. Thank you very much for your help.

regarding this being fixed with an update. For future reference you can
manage the status of your own bugs by clicking on the current status in
the yellow line
I tested the vivid-desktop-amd64.iso of march 6th as a live cd and the
firefox loads the big images without a problem.

Christoph, have you tried upgrading your install to the Utopic
enablement stack as outlined in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack to see if the issue is
resolved?
