OK, so we've narrowed the problem down to Qt when used in combination
with nouveau.
The bug is not in Unity8 or Mir.
I'm not sure which Qt packages to assign this bug to though.

The screenshot in comment #16 shows the problem is Qt (and happens in X
too, even without Unity8 or Mir).

I tried today the regular 15.10 Ubuntu LiveCD with Unity 7 and X and
found that Ubuntu Web Browser displays fonts wrong.
This was the only program that had such problem.

I confirm that it is now even more broken.
I checked by running todays LiveCD and it looked like in the screenshots

My experience is that bug status' are wrong at least as often as nouveau
gets any fixes. I'd say the bugs are probably still related, never
actually fixed in nouveau. Just we made changes to the various Unity's
that hid the issues intermittently.

The bug 748184 has links to two freedesktop bugs which have been fixed
long ago.
Also as mentioned before this problem started sometime in the Vivid
cycle. For the most part of that cycle I didn't have problems with
fonts.
