I was able to recreate this:

I think this is because the intent of installing the linux metapackage
as described here:

Switching back to nouveau seemed to fix the issue.

I believe I found where the problem lies - with the attached diff the
problem goes away (this is NOT a fix). It's specific to the gtk code.
