I was able to install 'steam-latest.deb' from Valve on a chroot without issues, and then ran 'steam' which installed all the i386 bits, again without any issues. If you have problems with the upgrade, try asking for help on a forum or IRC. There's nothing to be fixed in the Ubuntu archive anyway,
