Therefore, we are asking Canonical (pretty please with sugar on top) to change the name of the Unity desktop environment. When we at Unity Linux decided on our name, it was a long, drawn-out process where we voted and checked suggested names with Google and at one point I believe we even asked a developer if we could use a title similar to his defunct distro. Here is my attempt to answer some objections before they even come up. Why should Canonical change the name of its desktop? Why don't you just change the name of your distro? 1. We were here first. (AKA Prior Art) 2. We have invested significant time and effort into our branding. 3. The naming is causing confusion, and since we had the name first, we would like Canonical to rectify the situation. You're just being malicious. We were here first. If anything, I could accuse Canonical of being malicious-- after all, they did take our name. However, I don't think Canonical was or is trying to be malicious. One is a DESKTOP, the other is a DISTRIBUTION. They're not the same. They are not literally the same, but they are more than close enough. I don't think I have to say that if someone is searching for help with the Unity desktop on Google, there is a very good chance they would come upon Unity Linux stuff. We have already had people in our IRC channel asking for help when they are obviously not using Unity Linux. Why don't you just let it stand? I mean, there would probably be some extra Linux traffic coming your way. Yeah, there would certainly be more traffic, and a random bit here and there might even prove to be beneficial. However, I think in the end it would be mostly annoying to both Unity Linux and Ubuntu. People would be in the Ubuntu help channels asking for help for Unity Linux and vice versa. So please please please, Canonical, to save you and to save us hassle, rename your desktop. I know in many ways this is a huge request, but given the fact that a simple Google search for "Unity Linux" would have shown you that we were already out there, I don't think I'm being unreasonable.
