I am not sure if this answers anyone's problem: I see there are many
different issues reported and I feel a bit confused, but I am posting
here my case, hoping that it could help someone.

Hi Todd
I got my printer working well on 12.04 a while ago. From memory I
downloaded the driver from the Brother site.
Trying to upgrade/fresh install of 14.04 has been a problem. Have not
been able to install it or go back to 12.04. Keeping me busy.
