Thank you to both of you for your replies.

I'm embarrassed. I read the requirement to have a version of glib-2.0 equal to 
or greater than 2.10 as a requirement to have a version greater than or equal 
to 2.1.0. Since I had 2.4.8, I thought I was in no difficulty in that respect.

As to what distribution I am running that has only 2.4.8, it's Fedora 3. I set 
up a computer for a friend when Fedora 3 was current and she doesn't want me to 
upgrade it. Accordingly, I keep Fedora 3 as one of the distributions on my 
computer as well, just to test what I can and can't do under Fedora 3.
