Okay, so it is the chipset. So my options are to pick up a new card from
thinkpenguin or go back to a non-free distro. Alright. Thank you for
clearing things up.
Unfortunately this chipset is dependent on non-free firmware. Gentoo is also
not something this forum would support as the distribution has non-free
software related issues.
Here is a list of distributions:

I just switched my desktop to Trisquel from Gentoo a few days ago, and I
liked it so much, I installed it on my netbook. Everything works great,
except the wifi. The netbook uses a Ralink rt5390 as its wireless card,
which I was able to get working in Gentoo. I looked through the Trisquel
I just use VLC, but doesn't that use different codecs than Totem which is
Gstreamer?
Hello,
can you still boot that or a similar(architecture 32bit or 64bit) usb ?
Thanks lembas,
but I've not a cd drive (even external).
I installed the 4.5 via usb pen and the Help of someone (but I can not
remember who, sorry).
Thank you Nathan for posting this solution. The same thing happened to me,
when I attempted to move the panel to the left side of my screen as well.
Best regards

I use a self hosted SVN over https repo for this. It's running on an old
laptop so the power bill is low. I use no-ip to bypass dynamic ip with a
domain name. There is a free (as in beer) single domain name service at
no-ip. The noip2 client is free software in the Trisquel.

The *server* component is non-free.
The *service* can also be considered non-free, see:

I found a solution a day or so after making this thread, but didn't think to
post about it. In case someone gets stumped by this in the future, or just
wants to see what the problem is, this post is for you. :)

It's funny, the community designed the software with our own code, but
they're still able to control our use of it.What an absurdity!
Here's a guide for 5.0, should be very similar for 5.5.
