It is even simpler than what you wrote: patent-encumbered formats, such as MP3, are played (by Totem or Exaile through GStreamer) out of the box (no need to install anything); installing the gnome-session package is enough to enjoy GNOME Shell (the gnome-shell package comes as a dependency).
