If I remember well, the hard drive can be master or slave (some jumpers to
adjust). I believe GRUB should be on the master drive (otherwise Windows'
boot-loader is run).
However you may only need to switch the disks in the BIOS' boot order. At
least, that is the first thing I would try.

Yes, but Trisquel is a free distribution which does not support loading
non-free firmware. Performancewise AMD / ATI cards with the free radeon
drivers are a good option but only if your distribution / kernel supports
loading of non-free firmware.

What's wrong or what are you trying to do? You can read the manual page for
the driver, it's called sis.

I'd take this upstream since it should affect more than just Trisquel. Also
they will likely suggest you test against the nightly builds over at Xorg
