ATI cards don't support 3D without non-free software, full stop.
Whether the same doesn't go for the Nvidia card you're considering, though,
is a different question.
Thinking about getting a GeForce GTX 760... it looks to be the newest one
from NVIDIA that supports 3D acceleration and has free drivers. Should I go
with that choice or AMD?
I hear you on this one. I have a machine with a GeForce GT 325M, h Node says
it is compatible but in use it is very unstable and performance is dire.
Shame really.
I think the free distros should come with a program that would tell the user
whether their hardware works in freedom or not (
https://trisquel.info/en/issues/2124 ) and it could send the same report to
h-node automagically. This would really, really help with the sample size
which would mak
I get an "Access denied" error when trying to view that link :(
Why not just remove the firmware from the image?
I wouldn't trust Tails for anything important.
After reading onpon's post i actually have to agree.
All traffic is encrypted by default and if wifi firmware can't access the
rest of the system, then it's no privacy threat.
On top of that you can just use a pc which doesn't need non-free firmware in
the first place.
>I think the only proprietary software in Tails is now firmware blobs
right on onpon4!! that is exactly what I was saying.
>TAILS is not a libre distro. It has been discussed in another thread.
However, I maintain my opinion that it certainly is the best distro one can
use in the specific us
My two cents:
TAILS is not a libre distro. It has been discussed in another thread.
However, I maintain my opinion that it certainly is the best distro one can
use in the specific user-case it targets, and they don't rely on just adding
proprietary software for any reason, so it's not as ba
The GTX 769 works with 3D acceleration:
https://h-node.org/videocards/catalogue/en/1/1/undef/2013/works_with_3D/PCI-E
This is a card from 2013 though... makes you wonder if/when the GTX 970 and
980 cards make this list.
Hello.
I have performed a fresh install on my laptop, and I used full disk
encryption. If I want/need to install the OS again, to bring everything back
to the defaults, do I need to make new encryption (and wait for the long time
it takes to do so) or can I just install the OS inside the al
I actually want to point a couple things out:
Firstly, network cards aren't typically configured to have access to the rest
of the system. Simply encrypt your data, and a network card running non-libre
software can't do anything with it. If anything, your ISP is likely to be
more of a threa
Oh, one more thing to note:
I think the only proprietary software in Tails is now firmware blobs, but
this wasn't always the case. In the past, it was distributed with TrueCrypt.
It *does* include non-free software. I guess you mean it doesn't include a
proprietary program on top of the kernel and that's right.
Clearly, the amount of proprietary code included in tails is very small.
But who is using tails? People who really want to stay anonymous, and some of
them even
I don't get that eighter. I get akamaitechnologies as CDN.
The addons are - noscript,httpseverywhere,disconnect,spyblock (I use
icecat),click and clean
It does not include non free software - basically it's debian (open source,
so you can read the code and free software) -- but its kernel it's not
deblobbed so if you use the module of the kernel in order to make for example
your ati graphics card work you are using a binary blob and you don'
Exactly, it's a contradiction. With non-free code, tails provides neither
freedom nor privacy - so it doesn't satisfy anyone except people who don't
know better and believe it makes them anonymous.
so how can we use modern gpu's
you mean develope the drivers?
i am not a gpu expert.
but if tails includes non-free software
then how can you be sure its private?
how do you know what that software is doing if you cant see the source code?
You should lock version on gnome-control-center or it will try to upgrade to
belenos' repo one.
Trust me, this fella has heard enough of the free software speeches from
me. :-p He has expressed he is really enjoying Trisquel, and says that he
thinks he is going to like it.
As far as not having Photoshop or Oriface, That's not a problem I set him up
with OpenOffice and GIMP, and
yes. you can.
yes we can !
:)
Tails is excellent at protecting your privacy and anonymity - it is actually
the best and most powerful tool we have beacuse it is preconfigured with
several security enhancements.
It is not 100% libre for it is targeted at a very large audience. It is more
important to them to give anonymity
My first (and perhaps uneducated) impression of TAILS is that its target
audience is people who are not particularly tech savvy who will also be using
it on other people's computers which may not be freedom friendly.
Are there any actual advantages to using this distro instead of Trisquel (or
Ok, I made a mistake. What you have to do to install gnome-control-center
from belenos is to change it's dependencies, so that gdebi does not upgrade
compiz. Here is how you do it:

Taking a glance at their web page Tails looks like a GNU/Linux distribution
and I found several important problems with it:
*It asserts to be licensed as a whole under the “GNU/GPL (version 3 or
above)” (sic). There are 2 errors with this: The license name is
abbreviated “GNU GPL”, not “GNU
thats not good for a distro about protecting your privacy
how can you know what information your giving away if your using non-free
software?
ill just use a gnewsense usb stick with tor then.
I've tested it and I must say it works very well.
You have competition Ivaylo :-)
> dose it include non-free firmware?
Yes.
so you cant rely get a modern gpu that works well if you want to use free
software?
Tails seems to be compleatly license under the gpl
https://tails.boum.org/doc/about/license/index.en.html
so why is it not promoted on gnu's website?:
https://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html
dose it include non-free firmware?
It's listed in the Trisquel addons collection at

Video WithOut Flash helps users watching videos without flash. This is an
add-on for Mozilla based browsers and it is released under the GPL.
