Chromium OS has a major issue other than having a non-free kernel--it
steers users to use SaaSS and non-free JavaScript for as many primary
computing tasks as possible.

Whenever you're tempted by a proprietary application, look for alternatives.
For example, you could've installed Chromium, the Free Software version of
Chrome. (Although it recommends proprietary plugins. Beware.)
I once asked Schneier how much of a threat is the proprietary bios and the
firmware in our laptops.
His answer was: Against a State? Considerable!
Did you get one or more error messages when starting guvcview in a terminal?
Out of curiosity, I will install it on a 64bit machine this weekend to see
what happens.
You could try a more recent kernel taken from Jason Self's repository:

I doubt it would change anything but it is worth a try.
Thanks.
I have never added anything from any repository. I am using wired (DSL). I
still have my "6" live media (DVD). And, yes, when I used it live, it did
connect to the Internet. I will try the "lspci" command when I get home from

ddwrt and OpenWRT have propriretary firmware.
Usually, it's due to a graphics driver issue. Not all graphics drivers can

I am in the same situation! Unfortunately, Intel wifi cards don't have

No, there are no replicant devices that can play videos at the moment :/
not a single one even supports wifi...
If freedom is your goal and you're willing to make some compromises (like
running a proprietary bios) then you can use a smartphone, but you should buy
a phone that is supported by replicant.
Cyanogenmod is besides replicant afaik the best choice at the moment; at
least your system is rooted.

My dad also encountered something like this when he upgraded to Trisquel 7
