PSA: NOBODY UPGRADE YOUR TRISQUEL INSTALLS! I rebooted. EVERYTHING IS BROKEN
NOW! Icecat and abrowser are both gone. Wallpaper won't come back. ALL icons
are broken, I can't take any screenshots because it won't let me create any
new files, wifi is gone, the login screen is mostly gone, and
I should also add that some of my icons are broken now.
Ah. Ok. I imagined there was some kind of delimiter required. Didn't think to
do it that way. Well that works then.
So my grub file works now. Of course - it didn't resolve the problem. Had a
hunch it wouldn't.
I will attempt the kernel thing tomorrow morning. Just to confirm the version
I did do that, I just excluded it because it was like 200 extra lines of text

Have you tried to create a launcher from the "Main Menu" utility (in the
"System settings") with the path to the executable script as the "command"?
You could then try to drag it from the menu and drop it onto the panel.
It could be a typo-error somebody made. If they went and used another model
as a template for instance they might have accidentally only selected part of
the text to replace and thats how come you saw this.
Does this apply to radeon ati express 200m gpu?

I'm deeply sorry, I made the change to the setup of the antispam system which

It's really not that difficult to add jxself's repository and install a new
version of Linux. Linux is just one component that is easily replaced.
Reinstalling Trisquel would be much more difficult and it would probably not
help you.
I think you make a confusion between the MAC address (layer 2 of the OSI
model) and the IP address (level 3 of the OSI model)?
Indeed. Debian GNU/Linux shipped systemd in stable some five months ago.
Other mainstream distributions (Fedora, Arch, Mageia, Open SUSE, etc.)
adopted it years ago. Have you seen users *trying* systemd and ranting about
it (other than saying "you need to learn the new commands") since then?
Yes, three different GPU series.

Good luck!

Yea- read my comment above. A decentralized and distributed equivalent to

infancy which would be needed for it to work in a reliable way. For example

On the kernel suggestion - all that terminal work looks a little daunting for
the uninitiated. I have just started with xterm, and those instructions are

Lembas: It reads right now:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" "nomodeset"
That seems to be correct, because when I command it to update it's telling me
it can't find that nomodeset file.
I think the most critical thing is not who hosts it, as censored projects can
move elsewhere already (even though there are also 'accidental' issues), but
an educational campaign on how to sign commits. That said this doesn't mean
decentralization isn't important. I think we do need to decent
I don't have time to listen to all the episodes but what I've heard sounds

Just one question I'm asking myself right now: Would it be possible for a
blind person to install Trisquel by just following your podcast and the
instructions from the Orca screenreade
Sounds like you didn't read the logs or try manually loading the module.
Dunno if the latter is even possible in this case.
If you install in expert mode, the Debian installer will ask you whether
you'd like to add contrib and non-free.
In Iceweasel if you goto where ever > addons > get add
It never suggested to install the firmware for my ATI crap. I assure you of
that! I never saw the deblobbed Debian kernel or any other part of Debian
recommend the installation of the ati blob or mention the non-free firmware.
But maybe I'm an exception to this. I don't know that.
Onpon - that's correct. You can clearly see the "missing firmware" on boot on
the Debian kernel.
I see no problem in systemd - it's free software, well tested. I have it on
Debian and I'm fine with it. If you run servers you need to learn a lot of
new things but if you use it on a home installation and do basic stuff as I
do, you'll feel no difference at all other than a quite faster boo
Latest kernel as pointed out may help a lot.
welcome to the libre world!
You are clearly confused. Radeon, Intel GMA, and Intel HD are three
completely different series of GPUs. Radeon is from AMD, and the other two
are from Intel.
If I want to call Microshits Guinblobs like I just did, that should offend no

business they've been known for decades now deserves no respect at all. I
wish them all the worst of luck and hope they bankrupt. The world woul

Gracias, guys.
So the difference is slight: just the notification/reference.
But I (seems) did not encounter the notice from the Debian installation when
my wireless card did not fit to the free firmware...

Really~ Gracias.
I knew a bit of the systemd debate and would like to hear more.

Welcome to the free software community, Brian!
I have found that most suspend/resume issues are magically solved when

that you follow the instructions here. Scroll down to the heading "Using

So, how exactly does your GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line read at the moment?
To clarify, when Linux is missing a firmware file that's needed for some
hardware available, an error message is printed showing the name of the
firmware file. Linux-libre removes these references, but a side effect of
this is that it can't even load the firmware if it's available. Debian's
It does. Load a module that requires a proprietary firmware. Only Linux-libre
will not suggest you install such.
You make it sound like that's by design. It's not. In fact it is a bug, a
very low priority one. AFAIK
I doubt that the kernel is suggesting anything... rather some software of the
actual Debian System.
Linux-libre is the only one of the 2 programmed to refuse to run non-free
firmware (whether or not that's DRM is up for debate IM(H)O)
I do agree that this is an issue.
Centralized things in the Internet are always bad.
We must find a way to have decentralized (and preferably, federated)
software development. I prefer them to be federated because, that way, a
member of a project can join other projects without registration and

I suppose to real big difference is that the Libre kernel won't recommend any
non-free drivers where as the Debian one will. It doesn't included them from
the get go and still needs user intervention to install them but Linux-libre
won't even do that.
Many developers would rather not spend any money, this is why centralized
hosting platforms are used. Also, with centralized platforms, you don't need
to create an account for each project to report bugs or make pull requests,
and the interface is the same.
Just as the title:
What is the Difference between Linux-libre kernel and Debian (main) kernel?
(I mean Debian kernel as from its main repo, not "contrib" nor "nonfree"...
I think that this is a really bad idea and will only make the centralization
problem much worse. Projects should host their own code and not be dependent
on services that might sell out, change their tune over time or experience
long periods of downtime (I'm looking at you NotABug). By having
What do you mean? Only AMD makes graphic adapters. However, they can either
