What happens if you kill the panel?
pkill gnome-panel
Hi all,
I hope somebody can help me with a problem that just happened to me. Earlier
today I suspended my notebook, but when I opened it again, the usual task bar
icons (time, battery time, volume, network/wifi) disappeared and I do not
know how to have them back.
After rebooting, the
Settings are detected automatically for this service. I checked for the
supported types. I expanded the account folder in the interface and it
prompts for a password. If you let it add the passwpord to your keyring, you
won't have to type in your password every time you start Evolution. You
I have the same issue. The solution is brutally removing the USB stick so
that the device configuration is reviewed and the hard disk will be treated
as /dev/sda, not the USB.

The Grub install fail error can be mitigated by removing the USB stick and
retry. Eventually, the Grub installer will understand that it's the harddisk
you're installing the loader on.
It's a pretty crucial flaw. I wonder how it's not been patched on Trisquel. I
guess nobody netinstalls
As far as I understood, that is not true: only some ath9k chipsets have a
free firmware. No free firmware for ath10k chipsets:
https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-firmware/blob/master/LICENSE.qca_firmware
The new problem that Skylake introduced was the need for proprietary firmware
for some functionalities of the graphical chipset. But not, using it, the
situation was not bad according to Chris (ThinkPenguin's CEO):

As for
Reinstalling would not do anything. Removing ~/.config/evolution would, I
guess. But can't you just delete the account from Edtition/Preferences and
re-add it? And I still do not understand why you do not use STARTTLS since it
works and is at least as secure.
Almost all Atheros wifi chips works without blobs. Just buy one or more
different Atheros wifi card. Do not pay too much for each. 1-5 euros for
card, is fine. Modern Atheros cards need blobs I think.
When you have a computer with Libreboot running, you can
update/downgrade/reflash internally (through software or hardware) Libreboot
rom, You have total control of your computer. If you running proprietary
BIOS, you can flash internally Macbook 2,1, T60, x60 only.
What about skylake backd00red CPU?
I love classic Macintosh theme, buttons, windows. But hate today MacOSX look.
Now I know it's not just me, the network installer is crap for other people:
https://trisquel.info/en/forum/issues-encrypted-installation
I can't solve it either. I never got problems with Debian.
Thanks! Did you test to click (Authentication:) Test Supported Types? Or
expand the created account after finishing the setup? That's where I get the
error message (cannot connect to server/peer).
I don't get the Mail authentication request that you made two screen dumps
of! I remember I
Tx for the recommendation BugRep. I tried recordmydesktop nd it works just
fine. Will give Istanbul a try too.
I said using Ubuntu without proprietary software is easy, and it is, because
Ubuntu mostly separates proprietary software into designated repositories,
just like Debian does.
Wow! Using Redshift is so much better than adjusting the brightness of my
screen. I immediately noticed the reduced eye strain when I launched it! =D
@Jabjabs: Thanks so much for recommending this!
You might also want to try Istanbul for recording your desktop. It worked
better for me than recordMyDesktop.
I meant what I said about sole application of package-helpers were wrong ;)
Well, unemployment seems to be of a great fashion among the OECD countries

You can read/write your emails within Emacs, if you wish. With Gnus if I
remember well. I used to do that. A long time ago. I think it was Emacs 21.
Besides the basic Emacs modes, I use the Org mode (to take notes), AUCTeX (to
write in LaTeX, including for slideshows with Beamer), I run
Trisquel 7 with the latest kernel from https://jxself.org/linux-libre/
(Jxself's repository for Linux-libre) would work... but if you cannot boot
the install medium (but is it really the case or is the support issue related
to peripherals?), well, I do not know how you would install it!
Did you try GNUmail? I supposed it confused you, it that to me the first time
I tried it. It integrates well with Window maker.
And yeah, Emacs rocks!!!
Here is an idea:
Let's wait to talk about this until after Trisquel 8 is released.
If anybody agrees with your script idea, it should still be done after
Trisquel 8 is released.
Thanks Banana Magique. Installing right now.
My bad. It was supposed to say "x200 can not be flash easily"
Thanks bunches.
I've got an X60 (actually plural) and cold feet--stretching my technical
abilities is more valuable than the $20 "government surplus sale" lappy I may
bork along the way.
Gitlab as a code-hosting service has a 'C' grade. The actual software is free
software, which is what Trisquel runs on its servers.
Don't jump to conclusions prematurely.
Also, it is not so bad to host software on Gitlab, in my opinion. The site
can mostly be used without running JavaScript,
OP = Original Poster
Yes. :)
I was answering to onpon4. onpon4 said that it was easy. :( If it was, it
would be already done.
Installing Trisquel 7.0 on my desktop, I was receiving regular freezes
of the x display with the error "nouveau failed to idle channel". An
issue I've had before with this graphics card on other distros. After
updating my kernel with the package linux-generic-lts-utopic, and the
problem still
I have already used recordMyDesktop through its GTK interface (both packages
are in Trisquel's repository). Well, it worked!
Spy untu yu lol, well done!
Online search is disabled by default. Yes, Debian is a good alternative but
the laptop comes with Ubuntu, I think.
Is it easy to go from Windows to Ubuntu?
Is it easy to go from MacOS to Ubuntu?
It is just as easy to go from Slackware to Fedora.
It is just as easy to go from Ubuntu to Trisquel.
In all cases you download, put on DVD, and install.
What is the problem???
OK, I understand what the OP really wants.
Ubuntu 16.04 came out and the OP does not want to wait for Trisquel 8
Patience!
Ubuntu provides specific repositories of nonfree software, and Canonical
expressly promotes and recommends nonfree software under the Ubuntu name in
some of their distribution channels. Ubuntu offers the option to install only
free packages, which means it also offers the option to install

Well, beauty is in the eye of the (free) beer holder.

Ubuntu 16.04 without adding non-free repositories or firmware.
How about installing DEbian and not the Spyuntuyu thing?

It's the screenshot app? Isn't it? What is so special about it, GNubahn?
I'd like to ask, wht is your favorite screen recording app?
I'd like to make a brief video of my desktop but am uncertain on what program
is best suited for the task.
Yes, but the "restricted" repository is an officially supported repository.
It's a part of Ubuntu, unless you're going to be pedantic and say that
nothing is really part of Ubuntu unless it's on the live CD. Such a
distinction is meaningless. The whole point of the repositories is to use
I am aware of it. I know they offer a free unlimted VPN service. Did not use
it though.
Don't worry much, mate - it's not a biggie if you put it here. It's just that
as far as I understand, it is a good practice to put anything that is not
directly related to free software in the Troll Hole.
Have a nice day.
I'm confused. It was me who was wrong, wasn't it? Why are you talking about
correcting your post?
Thanks for the link, but unfortunately your link does not say anything
against my words, FSF has problem with
1. promoting non-free software.
2. making non-free software readily available to install
3. using Linux kernel (instead of Linux-libre)
You say these options make Ubuntu a non-free
If it is easy, why is so difficult transform it into Trisquel or into a
completely libre-distro?
Why do take so much time release the new version of Trisquel?
You are right. Unfortunately I cannot edit my previous post. ;)
You are right, "restricted" and "multiverse" components are readily available
by Ubuntu team but Ubuntu does not install them by default. It is *up to the
user* to install them or not. Ubuntu does not decide on behalf of users that
they must leave their freedom, Ubuntu just gives them the
If it is easy, why is so difficult to transform it into Trisquel or into a

Which is what I said (though to be fair it's not EXACTLY GNOME 2 - more like
≈GNOME 2)
Evolution 3.10.4 is in the repos. It should be patched and working. If not,
try STARTTSL.
I suspected so. How do I upgrade my Evolution? Seems like 3.10 is the latest
in the Trisquel repository, even though the Packet handler shows a bunch of
related packages with a star for upgrade. Maybe upgrading will do the trick?
Is there a way to filter so I can see upgradable packets only?
For x200 you need external flashing.
I understand exactly what you are saying. You want to make it very very easy
for an Ubuntu user to switch to Trisquel. They don't even have to think about
the decision, all they have to do is hit a button (run a script).
But what happens next? If they like Trisquel as much as Ubuntu, they
Really, MATE is GNOME 2. It's just under a different name because different
people are maintaining it now.
That's not quite the full story. The "restricted" and "multiverse"
repositories contain proprietary software, and "restricted" is officially
supported. But it is true that it is easy to use Ubuntu without any
proprietary software.
"Package helpers are solely used for modifying existing free-software
packages."
And can also be used pull in software but I digress: It shows Trisquel plops
them all into one place. :)
Guys I don't think anybody says MATe is superior compared to GNOME 2.
It's just that one is available for post-Natty Ubuntu and the other isn't.
(oh, and cursor-driven window tiling on MATE, I guess).
AFAIK, GNU-endorsed distros should not depend on third-party services and
must implement everything on premise. But no one can stop you from doing what
you want to do.
What do you mean by providing you the .deb package?
Why do you insist on labeling Ubuntu as non-free? Ubuntu is a free (as in
freedom) distro. The only non-free components are in Linux kernel (drivers).
Yes... what does that have to do with a comparison between MATE and GNOME 2?
Don't worry, it will. It's just a matter of having a recent enough kernel for
the hardware. Ubuntu 16.04 uses the same version of Linux that Trisquel 8 is
going to use, so Trisquel 8 will work with it.
Another chance to explain it to you:
How many users download and intall new Ubuntu versions? Yes, a lot.
They are trapped by a non-free distro. We have to let them use a OS Libre
easily. They like Ubuntu. But they are available to accept the changes to use
OS Libre. Is not possible to do

Package helpers are solely used for modifying existing free-software

`universe` components) and also excluding software which are from these

OpenJDK 8 will be the default JRE and JDK in Trisquel 8 if you choose to
install the "default-jre" or "default-jdk" packages from apt.
Compare the desktop look (and customization) between Trisquel 4.x and
Trisquel 6/7 and it is night and day on how much better Trisquel 4.x looked

Well, actually a 100% free software option will be change to Parabola

It's just I don't like being changing from system to system.
