"Extremism" boils down to "ideas and action we really don't like". In other
words, it's a meaningless propaganda phrase much like "intellectual
property". I remember someone demonstrating just how meaningless it is to
call someone an "extremist" by saying something like, "I'll use whatever
There are a lot: Postfix, Exim, qmail... The list goes on and on.
*BSD, Debian, Parabola.
It's certainly interesting and I wish them well, but way above my budget; I
did the math, and if I worked 40 hours a week at my current job (I currently
don't), one of these computers would be roughly half a year's salary.
I suspect our community will not have much of an impact on its success
Yea, this project is pretty fantastic!
Though, to be honest, the $3mil goal seems, er, a tad too steep for our
community.
I'm a little worried we won't make it /(;~:)\

Leah´s overreacting, but seems that no one cares.
Yea, like she's one to talk. :p
Most people consider Free Software extremism to be running a libre BIOS (I
consider it to be the natural progression)... I wonder wha
Dang, another double-post.
LOL! I like Terminal, it's not as scary as it was when I first tried it so
long ago. :)
Hi Mangy Dog, Thanks for explaining! This is fascinating stuff! I wish we

I laughed when I saw these last three posts a while ago... you are absolutely
right, but alas, it is too amusing to let go die yet...
How it is done ?
The removal of non-Free bits from the kernel Linux is accomplished with the
script deblob-main, that in turn uses deblob- and deblob-check.
deblob- is inspired in gNewSense's scripts, later customized for BLAG by Jeff

For those interested, there are ways to either silence pulseaudio while jack

those yet though.

Wow that is noticeable difference. I see I have some studying to do, so I can
put together something that my poor old machine can handle, till I can
convert my Mac. I'll look at all the suggestions again and compare them. You
have all been so wonderful. :D

True, but then you risk dying from tedium! :P
Misty, to clarify a little bit, or more correctly to prove the point let us
take an example. Let's use a very, very lightweight **GUI** music player -

The "terminal" music player we can relate to, the one I like, will be "moc"

I'm interested too. What is this exim?never heard before.

Trisquel there so I can do the next suggestion. Report coming soon. Thanks.
:)
Wow Strypey, you have thought this out well with the levels. That and the
usability rating idea make a lot of sense to me. It would be nice if you
could present these suggestions to the FSF for consideration.
What is a blob? It'd be interesting to know how these things got their name.
OK and thanks. I started the self test, this will take awhile it looks like.
It seems to me a good idea to look at the specs for these programs everyone's
suggesting, to see how much memory they require before installing, Due to the
lack of RAM, then I can decide which OS I want. I'd like to try the others to

Hmmm, considering my RAM problem, I really need to do some homework on all of
this.
Good news: your RAM is OK. If it was not, the screen would have turned red.
Memtest86+ starts over after doing all its tests: you can terminate it now.
Let us now see if the disk is OK. Trisquel has, by default, a tool named
"Disks" in the "System Settings". In it, you can select a disk (left
Hi, I'm on my other machine, the memtest is still going on my old one, but at
the bottom of the screen a message says it's complete, there's no errors, yet
at the top, it's still testing. Is it starting over? I don't know when the
message of being complete came up, sometime this morning. It's
OK, thanks for the info.
Is there a website where this information about graphics cards performance
with free code only resides? Somewhere on H-Node perhaps?
I'm interested. Never tried. Told that it's hard and risky by people I know
(and folks online like Matt Blaze and pals). Curious to hear about people's
experiences with DIY email on 100% libre distros; what hardware you used,
what distro, what mail applications etc.
"You are very good at tech. You are doing everything right."
+100!
"it doesn't get slower with each version"
This isn't true in my experience. I used to run XFCE (Xubuntu) on a computer
with 256MB or 512MB of RAM. I guarantee it won't work now with less than 1GB,
and if it's anything like Mate (also supposedly a "lightweight" desktop), it
really needs 2GB.
Hmmm. Distrowatch might be saying it's "dormant" because they haven't
released a new version since 2012?

But it does look like they are actively working on shipping a new release
this year:

Thanks for the tip about swap files, I'll have a play with that. There's some
good info on swap partitions and swap files here:

"One swap partition can be shared between several GNU/Linux distributions"
That's what I thought too, but I came
Dragora GNU/Linux looks actively developed:

I just completed an installation of exim on Trisquel. I am creating this

The other downside with Tails, from a libre POV, is that it uses the blobbed
version of the Linux kernel, not Linux-libre. This is why FSF will not
endorse it. Of course, RiseUp (developers of Tails) do this for a good
reason; Tails is designed to allows its user to get on the net from any PC

A few points in response to the above:
* Some distros will refuse to install unless a /swap partition is defined,
and they create one automatically if you choose 'guided partitioning'.
* If OP has only 1GB RAM, they need Trisquel-Mini, or at least a much more
lightweight desktop than GNOME.
